james j. logan
James Logan was born into a family made of a long line of tradesmen. At a young age, he was always told how he would inherit his family's greatest fortune, which was really a fishing and logging company that had been in their family since the start of it back in the early 1920's by his grandfather. Stories of how his grandfather strove to keep their family together and generate a decent income in the process, was always to be told around the dinner table while growing up. Being a rather good child, that never crossed his parents, he led a happy life sometimes wishing for less bells and whistles to it all. A family that made sure and insisted the young boy know and understand the family business from every aspect. Not only this, but what it meant to really work for a living, regardless of need. Never the best or the brightest, James was found to have a better take on people, rather than having great people skills. A trait that was quickly noticed by his mother, who would easily tell you that he was always the type of child that knew just how to get what he wanted. Regardless of a biased there, she had a good point on that little trait, one that she loved to claim that he had inherited from his father.
His people skilled never seemed to get any better, as he found himself the little guy in school. The runt of the liter that was set to get picked on and bullied. Stubborn and as hard headed as he came, something his mother would have pointed at his father for too, the boy was relentless against the bullies. Refusing to give in or give them what they wanted. There were to be no tears shed or money handed over. Refusing to play the tattle tale and set on fixing his own problems, James became more and more the recluse. An outsider looking in as far as kids on the playground or bothering with the adults. He was alone and without any siblings. His own father told him that he needed to be strong, to live up to the family name. In James' eyes, that's what he was doing. Especially as he waited and watched, preparing himself for the right moment and the wrong bully to mess with him. A day that came in during his primary school days, where he was pushed too far and easily took the other boy by surprise. Knocking him down, he jumped on the boy, punching him repeatedly, being cheered on by a group of children that circled and gawked at the scene. Not pulling away until he was literally picked up and removed, little James was no longer bullied. This didn't change his own choice of isolation.
By his secondary school days, his parents pushed him for college. He didn't want to. While he had understood the in's and out's of the company. James didn't see the point of going out of his way to be something deemed bigger and better, because he only saw it as throwing money at people for a piece of paper. It was unnecessary. He knew everything that he needed to know. It didn't help that his motives were also tied into the fact of his own on and off again girlfriend. Candace was his high school sweetheart, and his mother only saw bad things coming from that pairing. A long time coming seeing the way the young girl treated him since they were little. Only bothering to notice him after a fight at school and attempting to latch on since. The way she manipulated him with words. Yes, she was certain of the worst and didn't like her at all.
After talking things out with Candace, they both decided to run off together in the middle of the night to get married, just after her eighteenth birthday. It was in April of their senior year. Her younger sister had caught what was going on and snitched on them, without their realization. Both sets of parents finding them and taking them home, Candace's parents made sure that the girl went away for college and to a place that he didn't know of. Unable to see or contact her, James found himself distraught and signing up for the armed forces.
After serving eight years, he returned home only to gain the news that his father had not only divorced his mother but chose to remarry a woman that he was apparently cheating on James mother with. Welcoming a five year old little girl, who was apparently his half sister, was not something he was expecting in the slightest. Standing there and playing best man at twenty-six, he had very little time to really come to terms with it all. But given the child's demeanor, it was hard not to. To love the little girl as though she had always been part of the plan. As if this whole situation had been normal. James had always wanted siblings, and even as he found himself upset with his own father, as well as regularly agitated by others thinking that he was the young girl's father, James did everything he could for Jenny. Regardless of the big brotherly teasing, he would always and forever be there for her and help her in anyway that he could. Or so he thought.
After the wedding, James decided to stay in the area, going back to work with the fish and logging company. It allowed him to keep an eye on his family, having felt so out of the loop about things before. His parents seemed to think that everything that had happened between them was best explained in person and not while he was on active duty. Life was good, and he was even engaged to a woman that made him happy. It was four years later that there was a fatal car accident with his father and Jenny. He was running late and trying to get the little girl to daycare, when there was some black ice and he fully lost control of the vehicle. Panicking and arguing on his phone, he only made the situation worse as the car took hit a tree. The grief that came, more so over the end of the little girl versus his father was hard to swallow. There had been no way to protect her from that, no matter what. Things only became worse, as he found certain aspects out, with his own inheritance.
The company had been going downhill for years due to his fathers bad management. Bad deals made and gambling done without anyone knowing. It became harder and harder to really view him as a good man, but James had never been that close to him. Rather, he was simply taught how to be a man. Now he was needing to attempt to dig himself out of what felt like his own buried plot. One that his father had filled with dirt. Late nights and long days left him with realizing that he would have to cut off an arm or a leg to save the body of the company. That it would do some good, even though he really didn't want to do it. His stubbornness led him to fighting it off for as long as he could, but it was either that or it would be taken from him in some means without him gaining a penny. The last thing he was about to do was sit there and hold no say and have nothing left of it all. A battle that was even left with his fiancee, leading to their breakup as well.
Venturing south, to the states, he looked for other ways to help increase business. At the same time, this gave him a way out of Toronto, feeling more like a failure. First trying out New York, and then Boston, trying to find some means of either merging with another small business that he would believe could be trusted, or righting what he felt like was his wrong, and expanding the company. Taking just over three years to set up an expansion to the area, and dealing with the ups and downs that has brought upon him, his diligence has paid off, leaving him in the area for nearly six years now. Just without the need to bother with going back home without extreme need when he can hold conferences over his phone and not have to think about what he left behind. Rather, continue to build and stand tall and be the man his father taught him to be, rather than what he showed himself to be.
